Private Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT)

Transurethral resection of bladder tumor, otherwise known as TURBT, is a procedure done to treat and diagnose bladder cancer.  Urology has quite a long wait time in most provinces and this procedure can take months to schedule.  When you are dealing with the possibility of cancer, one does not like wait.  Fortunately, there is an option available in Canada if you wish to go the private route.

What Happens During a TURBT Procedure?

During a TURBT procedure, the surgeon will insert a scope with a camera on it through the urethra to find the tumor or area that needs removed or biopsied.  There are no incisions required so it is a fairly easy procedure.  General anesthesia is normally given, although, some surgeons use regional anesthesia through the spine numbing the lower half of your body only.

Once they have inserted the scope, the camera assists the surgeon in locating the affected area or tumor that needs resected.  Once it has been removed, it will be sent off to pathology to determine the severity.  After the scope is removed, a catheter is sometimes inserted to drain any urine or other fluids that collected in the bladder to prevent blood clots.  If a catheter is not warranted, the surgeon will flush the bladder with saline to clean things.

After a TURBT Procedure

After the TURBT, you will likely go to recovery for a couple of hours before being released.  If you have a catheter, it is possible you will need to go home with it and keep in for 2-5 additional days.  It depends on how large of tumor was removed and how much blood is in your urine.  Drinking plenty of water after the procedure will move your recovery along quicker and reduce your chances of a urinary tract infection (UTI).  Most people will recover fully in 6 weeks, however, some people can feel back to normal in as little as 2 weeks.

Options for Private TURBT

While the options for a private TURBT are limited in Canada, they are available.  The pricing starts at $11,000 CAD.  A more affordable price can be found in the US starting at $4,500 USD.  For assistance in finding which option is best for your situation, contact Health Vantis at or 877-344-3544 for more information.
