Private Urodynamic Tests

Private Urodynamic Tests

Private urodynamic testing is available in Canada on a limited basis.  Urodynamic tests help diagnosis issues with your bladder, urethra, and urinary sphincter, which is the muscle between your urethra and bladder.  The test tells the health care provider how well you store and release urine.

What Can Urodynamic Tests Measure?

  • Nerve function of the bladder
  • Muscle function of the bladder
  • Pressure in and around your bladder
  • How much your pee flow
  • How fast your pee flows

The results will aid your doctor to determine the best treatment plan for your symptoms.

What Types of Tests are Urodynamic?

  • Cystometry – This measures the pressure inside the bladder as it is being filled.  It can tell you how much urine the bladder can hold, pressures on the bladder, contractions or spasms on the wall of the bladder as it’s filling, and how full your bladder actually is when you have an urge to urinate.
  • Electromyography – This measures the activity of the pelvic floor muscles.
  • Pressure flow study – This simultaneously measures the pressure inside the bladder and flow of urine while urinating.  Helps identify any bladder output blockage, i.e. prostate enlargement or anterior vaginal wall prolapse.
  • Uroflowmetry – Measures the flow rate of urine, i.e. how fast the urine comes out
  • Postvoid residual measurement – Conducted with ultrasound or by catheter into the bladder to measure how much urine is left after urination.
  • Video urodynamic – x-rays or ultrasound to take pictures and videos of the bladder while it fills and empties.

Reasons One Might Have Urodynamic Testing

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Needing to urinate more frequently
  • Sudden and immediate urges to urinate
  • Pain while urinating
  • Recurrent UTIs (urinary tract infection)
  • Problems starting the flow
  • Inability to fully empty the bladder (urinary retention)
  • A slow or weak stream or flow that stops and starts again
